Gynecomastia, commonly called man boobs, is a condition characterized by the development of breasts in men.

A similar condition can occur for the intake of specific hormones or for various other causes during the life of an adult man. Whatever the cause, and the type of man boobs, the person who suffers this disorder is embarrassed to show to other people and psychologically feels uncomfortable, because he sees compromised, in part, his image of masculinity and virility.

Today, gynecomastia is a fairly common disorder, especially if the so-called "fake gynecomastia" is considered. The significant increase of cases reported over the past decade implies that in future we will witness a further spread of the problem (especially in industrialized countries).

Man boobs may be unilateral or bilateral, it is manifested initially with increased sensitivity and the onset of painful swelling under the nipple area. In the second stage there is a further swelling associated with the deposition of fatty tissue and increase in glandular tissue.

The causes for which there may be an increase of breasts in men are different, so there are different types of man boobs, such as:
Pubertal Gynecomastia:
Most children between 12 and 17 years go through a phase of rapid development of breast tissue, called pubertal gynecomastia. The duration of this phase is about one year for about one third of the boys, and in three years this condition is fully regressed. Only in 5-6% of cases the gynecomastia persists beyond 17 years of age, in these cases the possibility of spontaneous regression is reduced and surgery is indicated.

Congenital Gynecomastia:
In this case the possible factors are an increased sensitivity of breast tissue to hormonal stimuli, or hormone imbalance. Man boobs therefore have a familiar connotation and in some cases is associated with other disorders.

Induced or Acquired Gynecomastia:
Treatments with estrogen or androgen can induce man boobs, including hormone treatments to treat prostate cancers. The list of drugs potentially able to cause gynecomastia in humans is long, and includes: ergotamine, diazepam, finasteride, spironolactone, digital, antiandrogens in general, and especially anabolic steroids used by athletes to increase muscle mass.

True Gynecomastia:
If the increase in breast volume in humans, is caused by an increase in mammary gland, it is called true gynecomastia.

The "false" gynecomastia (or pseudogynecomastia):
If the increase in breast volume in humans, is caused by an accumulation of adipose tissue (fat) in the breast, this condition is called false gynecomastia or pseudogynecomastia.
Both conditions (true gynecomastia and false gynecomastia) sometimes may occur simultaneously.
